SIKU

Siku ran his blunted claws down the length of his fated mate’s sturdy chest, playing with the smooth black hair with hints of white and yellow that coated it. Seeing the darkness made Siku inexplicably happy, as it was a sign Eddie was already connected to his pack. Their reunion had not only gone better than expected, it went phenomaly! There were no signs of his former pack members, which meant Eddie could be searching for a new home and a new pack to call his own. Times were rough with the elders growing too weak to hunt, and the youth thinning out in Siku’s generation. The few cubs born in the last generation between Savaiññiq and her husband Malġuk were sterile betas who were now old men and women. Siku was born after his father’s death, and his birth nearly killed his mother. As children were held in common, he never thought of Savaiññiq as his mother before. But now, as he was about to give birth to cubs of his own, he wished she was beside him. She always said his birth was Qiġñiqtaaluk’s answers to their prayers, the first of the Qiġñiq, their shared ancestor from a mythical past. Without fresh blood, they would die out. But now, their future was looking brighter by the minute.

He shivered, thinking about the times he tried to mate with other alphas after his coming of age ceremony. Their lust always ended in violence when he didn’t become pregnant, and he’d limp back home to be pampered by his pack members. Then, Savaiññiq forbade him from even trying. Of course he didn’t listen, a rebellious eighteen-year-old—by human standards—on a mission. When he turned nineteen orbits old, Siku tried one last time, making the journey to Juneau, Alaska after scenting a new alpha, one that wasn’t of any pack he knew. Finally, Siku had fulfilled his purpose and somehow found love in the process.

Siku shifted so he could look out the large window overlooking the forest and hills below. The forest around Eddie’s new territory was nice, but too close to humans for Siku’s comfort. However, if he couldn’t convince the alpha to join the Qiġñiq pack up north, it would do. They would take another mechanical carrier up north and come down south, marking out a new territory for the Qiġñiq pack. Siku allowed his head to rest on top of Eddie’s chest, listening to his heart beating, relishing the fact that Eddie was his and he belonged to Eddie. All was right, aside from a gnawing ache that was building in his stomach and spreading to his womb. He felt like he’d be sick, and it wasn’t the usual pain of a rough mating, Siku was certain. It was the same awful feeling he got during the new moon, only this time the moon’s phases and his illness were not aligned.

“Uvlaallautaq,” Siku said as Edward stirred, kissing his plump lips.

“I take it that uvo-laa-lauo-taq means good morning? Good morning, Siku. We need to talk.
